Glamping in the Snow and Other Unique Northern Lights Holidays

Aurora holidays in Scandinavia with an additional wow factor

There is something completely enchanting about seeing the Northern Lights. It is an experience that is on many people’s bucket lists and there are lots of ways to immerse yourself in a Northern Lights holiday, from evening snow shoe walks to romantic rides in a snowmobile drawn sled and torchlight husky sledding.

If you want a completely unique holiday experience then we have a few incredible suggestions for you for that additional wow factor.

Glamping beneath the Northern Lights

It doesn’t get more immersive than sleeping in a traditional Sami tent heated by a log fire with nothing between you and the pristine Lapland night sky than some canvas and a lot of reindeer skins.

The Sampi Nature Camp in Swedish Lapland is run by a local Sami family to give you an authentic Lapland experience from when the morning sun first sparkles on the snow-capped tree canopy, to when the stars – and hopefully the aurora – come out overhead.

We suggest a few nights at the camp, combined with a night or two at the Ripan Hotel, where you can relax with spa access in the modern but cosy hotel.

Explore the frontier of the Arctic in Svalbard

Svalbard is the Arctic frontier, the northernmost edge of the inhabited world, it is one of the few places where you can see the Northern Lights in the ‘day’ at certain times of the year, due to the long polar night this far north.

You can stay in a remote trapper’s hut guarded by the local pack of huskies who will keep watch for polar bears as you get a taste of the wilderness. You can also explore the home of the polar bear by husky sled or snowmobile and enjoy torchlight glacier hikes on one of Svalbard’s many glaciers.
