Have you been thinking of skiing in Scandinavia, but been put off by tales of sub-zero temperatures and short days? Let us set the record straight, spring in Scandinavia is a beautiful time of year, with long days and mild temperatures.
12 hours or more of daylight
By the end of March most of Scandinavia has 12 hours or more of daylight and temperatures are on the rise, usually hovering around the zero mark but often rising to plus 10oC or more by midday. You can get beautiful blue sky days alongside a good chance of fresh snow. All this combines to make incredible skiing conditions, especially if you’re looking to introduce your family to the joys of skiing this Easter. Scandinavia isn’t just for beginners though, the resorts cater to all levels of skier with resorts in Lapland and Sweden hosting rounds of the FIS World Cup races in various alpine disciplines.
Reliable snow through to April
Snow conditions throughout Scandinavia are guaranteed right through to the end of April, so there is no need to put up with patchy snow in the Alps in the middle of March. This is especially important for skiing in Easter as it fall so late in April 2017.
Snow conditions in Scandinavia are simply more reliable because the resorts are further north. The northerly location means that temperatures at night regularly drop to zero or below throughout the season, this ensures snow making can provide a substantial base (sometimes called snowpack) which keeps the snow conditions great into the spring. Mild temperatures are common but you can also get snow regularly through to the end of April. Some resorts above the Arctic Circle even boast skiing right through to June, where you can ski beneath the midnight sun.
Spring in Scandinavia isn’t just for families either. While the resorts are still very family focused, the Scandinavians absolutely love Easter weekend and you’ll find a vibrant, party atmosphere, perfect if you want to emulate our Scandinavian cousins and celebrate the start of spring in style. Live music and a great après ski atmosphere to rival the Alps makes spring a great time to ski for everyone.
