This week we wanted to share with you our top tips for booking and traveling on a great family holiday. Whether you’re taking your family on a summer vacation or a winter holiday we know you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself completely if you think about these three things:
1. Book early
The best way to ensure you are relaxed from start to finish is to book your holiday with plenty of time to go. First off, there is nothing like an unnecessary deadline to add stress to your probably already busy life, so by starting to look for your holiday 9 – 12 months in advance you give yourself plenty of time to search, consider and finalise your decision.
Booking early has a few other advantages as well; you’re going to have the best choice of accommodation in order to find something perfectly suited to you. Booking 9 – 12 months ahead will mean you can snap up that ski-in/ski-out cabin, exclusive catered chalet or the best beachfront villa. For hotels and apartments you should still be looking 6 – 9 months ahead to ensure you get your first choice of room type.
You’ll also get more time to prepare, whether it’s spreading your holiday costs or purchasing your holiday essentials. When you book in advance you can grab yourself a bargain by snapping up off-season prices on your clothing and accessories. Whether it’s new beach towels or a(nother) new round of ski jackets for the kids, who doesn’t love a bargain, especially when you could always put the savings toward an hour in the spa, or a nice meal out?
2. Book assured with insurance
Be sure you book your holiday with a reputable, assured tour operator or travel agent. Look for companies who are members of programmes like ABTA and AITO who will hold their members to strict standards for their customer care and finances, which means you can book your holiday with complete confidence. When you book a package holiday (usually including at least accommodation and flights) you should always look out for an ATOL licence too, as that offers you additional protection.
We all know life can be unpredictable, so always make sure you take out your own travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday. As well as covering you while you are away, travel insurance will usually cover you for at least some costs if you have to cancel before you travel. If you pay a fee for your bank account, why not check to see if the perks include travel insurance. Do always make sure your chosen insurance covers you for your specific holiday, including cancellations and any activities you plan to do while you’re away – winter sports particularly can require additional cover.
3. Get expert advice, all in one place
Sometimes planning a holiday can be fun; doing your own research and finding the best of everything for your particular needs can be a great experience. Sometimes we just don’t have the time, or the confidence to take all of that on ourselves, especially if you are travelling with your family. Booking through a destination expert will save you precious time, as they’ve already put in the hours, not only researching but also visiting the destinations they specialise in, to ensure they can make the right suggestions for you.
An expert can save you time by presenting a few options best suited to your needs. They can also help you get the best views from your room, or book you the last one of your preferred apartments because they have connections in resort. An expert tour operator can also book everything in one place, from flights, transfers and accommodation, to activities, lessons and even restaurant reservations. Which means you only have to talk to one person to keep track of everything, and if something isn’t quite right, you’ve got someone on your side with leverage to help get it sorted.
So when you come to book your next holiday, be sure to keep in mind our top 3 tips to ensure you’re relaxed from the moment you book, to the moment your feet touch the ski slopes or the sand: Book in advance, book assured, and book all in one place.
