Half Term Skiing

Tips for a fantastic holiday

October half term is successfully behind you, Christmas is looming charmingly in the distance, and it suddenly occurs to you that you really should have already booked your February half term holiday.

Well, don’t worry, if you’re wondering where to go for the best skiing holiday for you and your family, or you have half term week off and want to know where to go to avoid the school holiday crowds. We can help.

Choose Scandinavia

Okay, maybe this one is a bit rich coming from us, but actually there is a reason we’re so loopy about Sweden, Finland, Norway and Iceland. We chose to promote holidays here for a lot of reasons, but a big part of it is because they offer something that traditional ski resorts in the Alps don’t – they’re still quiet in school holidays.

Honestly, we could go on about how great the instructors are, the wonderful hotels, the great activities, our complimentary childcare and the short flights and/or transfers. But actually, when you’re on a skiing holiday in Scandinavia in the school holidays, the biggest difference you’ll notice is how much quieter the slopes are. That means they’re safer and more relaxing for you and your family, plus the lift queues are shorter so you spend more time skiing and less time standing around.

Be flexible

Hopefully we’ve got you convinced that Scandinavia is for you. Now you’re going to need to be a bit flexible. There are only 3 months until February Half Term but there are still plenty of options out there. Whether you're after a fantastic family skiing holidays or are in search of adventures in the snow with more of a focus on other activities, there are a great choice of alternative destinations, from world renowned ski resorts in Sweden to peaceful escapes in the heart of Lapland. It’s time to think outside the box, and our favourite alternative destination this half term is Lapland.

Ski in Lapland this Half Term

Levi is Lapland’s largest ski resort and hosts World Cup ski races, but it’s still lesser known as a skiing destination in the UK, which means that the slopes are beautifully quiet. If you’re after real peace and quiet and an authentic taste of Lapland then somewhere like Saariselka would be a great option. Saariselka is a small but charming resort in the heart of Lapland and is ideal if you’re after more than just a skiing holiday. Flights to Lapland from the UK are via Helsinki, but once you get there transfers to your accommodation are as little as 20 minutes. That that means the travel time is comparable to taking direct flight followed by a 2 hour transfer.

"We had an amazing holiday, made so by good organisation, excellent accommodation, excellent location and [an] excellent resort. Everything ran like clockwork when in Levi, no queues, really accommodating people, [it is the] perfect family resort." Mrs C, travelled with skiLapland for February half term, 2016.
